The empty quadrant.
All six capabilities,
in your VPC.

Six capabilities most gateways split across separate products: inbound monetization, agent identity, content for agents, outbound AI governance, in-VPC deployment, and clustering with no database behind it. Cloudflare ships every column and does it well, at Cloudflare’s edge. SBproxy is the only runtime here that ships all six inside your own perimeter.

Scores reflect what each vendor ships in production today, read against six capabilities: inbound monetization, agent identity, content for agents, outbound AI governance, in-VPC deployment, and clustering with no database behind it. Two things set SBproxy apart. It is the only row that governs AI in both directions, the models you call and the agents that call you, on one runtime. And it is the only row that runs as a self-hosted fleet kept coherent by a gossip mesh, with no Redis and no PostgreSQL in the path. That last column is stricter than it looks: Bifrost clusters well, but its cluster mode needs an external PostgreSQL and only runs under a commercial licence. Cloudflare covers the AI and content columns too, and does them well, but it runs at Cloudflare's edge. SBproxy runs in your VPC, which is the only reason it scores full across every column.
teardowns

Pick one for the long version.

compare / cloudflare

Cloudflare

Cloudflare ships every column, at Cloudflare’s edge. The empty quadrant is everything Cloudflare does, in your VPC.

compare / openrouter

OpenRouter

The fastest way to reach every model without signing a single provider contract. You are renting someone else’s keys, and the bill has a percentage on it.

compare / helicone

Helicone

Helicone is excellent for LLM observability and AI app teams. It is not a governance gateway, and it is not a gateway for inbound traffic.

compare / kong

Kong AI Gateway

A mature traditional gateway with AI plugins on top. The AI features are paywalled in the enterprise tier and the plugin language is Lua.

compare / litellm

LiteLLM

A Python library and proxy for routing across LLM providers. Strong on model coverage. Not a governance gateway. Python attack surface is its own concern.

compare / portkey

Portkey

AI gateway with strong feature breadth. No traditional API gateway underneath. No inbound monetization.

compare / bifrost

Bifrost

A fast Go AI gateway, now part of Maxim AI. Apache 2.0 on the surface, with clustering, guardrails, and governance behind the paid tier.

compare / lunar.dev

Lunar.dev

An enterprise MCP gateway and AI control plane, acquired by Boomi in 2026. Good product, and it now ships on an integration platform’s roadmap.

compare / apigee

Apigee

Google’s flagship API management product. Mature, expensive, GCP-flavoured. AI features are bolted on and the runtime predates the agent era.

compare / envoy ai gateway

Envoy AI Gateway

OSS L7 proxy with an AI gateway extension. Strong runtime. Inbound monetization, agent identity, and content negotiation are out of scope.

compare / omniroute

OmniRoute

A free-tier aggregator for coding agents. Brilliant for one developer stretching quotas on a laptop. It is not a traffic layer for a team.

compare / build vs buy

Building it yourself

Pick three of the five capabilities. Now operate it. SBproxy ships all five and runs in your perimeter.

Want to talk
before you install?

The gateway is on GitHub under Apache 2.0 and you can install it right now, so nothing here is gated behind a sales call. Use this form for deployment questions, migration scoping, or anything you would rather not file as a public issue.

01
Share your stack. A few details on providers, scale, and the gateway you might be replacing.
02
Talk to engineering. A real conversation about whether SBproxy fits the deployment shape you have in mind. No demo theatre.
03
Get a straight answer. Including when the answer is that SBproxy is the wrong fit and you should run something else.
