LiteLLM routes models.
It does not govern traffic.
LiteLLM is a popular library for routing across LLM providers from a Python application. The proxy server packages the same library behind an HTTP endpoint. It is not a gateway. Inbound monetization, agent identity, content negotiation, WAF, mTLS, and OpenAPI emission are not in scope. SBproxy is the runtime, not the routing library.

LLM routing. Strong on model coverage and OpenAI-compatible API mapping.
All five capabilities on one runtime. Routing is one column of five.
None. LiteLLM proxy is in front of outbound LLM calls.
Web, API, MCP, agents. Pay Per Crawl, Web Bot Auth, virtual keys, OpenAPI emission.
Python. The runtime fetches code from a public package registry on install. Auto-execution paths in Python’s import system have produced production incidents.
Single static binary. No interpreter, no runtime package fetch, no .pth auto-execution. Deployment shape matches nginx, HAProxy, Envoy.
Python with worker processes. Acceptable at small scale, expensive at high concurrency.
Sub-millisecond p99 added latency. Idle RSS in single-digit megabytes.
Virtual keys live in a database the proxy reads. Sharing budgets and rate limits across instances needs an external Redis. Adding or revoking a key is a database write the workers pick up.
A live key plane: mint, rotate, and revoke through the admin API with a revoke effective on the next request. Run a fleet and a gossip mesh keeps the keys, budgets, and rate counters coherent with CRDT counters, so the cluster coordinates itself without an external Redis.
You want a routing library inside a Python application and you accept the runtime model.
You need a real gateway in front of public traffic, you want one runtime for inbound and outbound, or you want a fleet that stays coherent without standing up Redis.

before you install?
The gateway is on GitHub under Apache 2.0 and you can install it right now, so nothing here is gated behind a sales call. Use this form for deployment questions, migration scoping, or anything you would rather not file as a public issue.
