Portkey is the AI gateway
that still needs a gateway.
Portkey covers the outbound AI half well. The API half is missing. If you put a real API behind Portkey you still need Kong or Apigee in front of it for WAF, mTLS, request signing, and the rest of the security stack. Inbound monetization, agent identity, and content for agents are not in scope.

AI gateway only. Routing, fallbacks, guardrails, semantic cache, MCP. No WAF, no mTLS, no real transforms.
One runtime. Inbound monetization, agent identity, content, outbound AI governance, all on one policy graph.
Node plus V8 isolates per request. Setup cost is paid every call.
No per-request runtime setup. Throughput is multiples of the next AI gateway in published benchmarks.
MCP support shipped in March 2026.
MCP gateway with OAuth2, DPoP, PKCE, DCR. Federation across internal tools with prefix and RBAC.
None.
Pay Per Crawl, x402, MPP, virtual keys.
You only have outbound LLM traffic, you trust Node at scale, and you do not need an API gateway in front of it.
You also have non-AI APIs, you need WAF or mTLS, or you have hit a Node throughput ceiling.

Want to talk
before you install?
The gateway is on GitHub under Apache 2.0 and you can install it right now, so nothing here is gated behind a sales call. Use this form for deployment questions, migration scoping, or anything you would rather not file as a public issue.
