compare / envoy ai gateway

Envoy is a great runtime.
It does not govern monetization.

Envoy is the strongest L7 proxy in the OSS category and the AI Gateway extension covers outbound LLM calls. Inbound monetization, agent identity, content negotiation, MCP federation, and Pay Per Crawl are not in scope. SBproxy treats those as first-class.

Scope
Envoy AI Gateway

Outbound AI gateway plus traditional L7 proxy.

sbproxy

One runtime. Inbound monetization, agent identity, content for agents, outbound AI governance.

Configuration surface
Envoy AI Gateway

xDS, gRPC control plane, multiple resource types.

sbproxy

One YAML. Hot reload. No control plane to operate.

Operational model
Envoy AI Gateway

You assemble the gateway. Control plane, sidecar, observability stack are separate components.

sbproxy

Single binary or K8s operator. Same policy graph in every shape.

When Envoy AI Gateway wins

You already run Envoy at scale and you want to extend it for outbound LLM calls.

When sbproxy wins

You want inbound monetization, agent identity, and content for agents on the same gateway, with one config.

Want to talk
before you install?

The gateway is on GitHub under Apache 2.0 and you can install it right now, so nothing here is gated behind a sales call. Use this form for deployment questions, migration scoping, or anything you would rather not file as a public issue.

01
Share your stack. A few details on providers, scale, and the gateway you might be replacing.
02
Talk to engineering. A real conversation about whether SBproxy fits the deployment shape you have in mind. No demo theatre.
03
Get a straight answer. Including when the answer is that SBproxy is the wrong fit and you should run something else.
