Bifrost gates the cluster.
SBproxy ships it in the binary.
Bifrost is the closest thing to a head-on competitor in this list and it is well built. Go, quick, honest benchmarks against LiteLLM, and a team that clearly knows what a gateway is for. The disagreement is about what belongs in the open-source build. Their clustering, guardrails, and advanced governance sit in the paid tier; ours are in the Apache 2.0 binary you can download right now.

Cluster mode requires an external PostgreSQL, and SQLite is single-node only. Their docs state that bifrost.cluster.* is an enterprise capability: OSS images accept the config and do not run cluster mode at runtime.
Gossip mesh in the Apache 2.0 binary. SWIM membership, CRDT counters, a quorum-replicated durable store, and cross-node budget governance with no PostgreSQL and no Redis. Point a key at a shared backend only when a limit has to be exact under concurrent traffic.
Guardrails, adaptive load balancing, and advanced governance are enterprise features with a 14-day trial.
Guardrails, 18 routing strategies, virtual keys, budgets, semantic cache, and the signed usage ledger are all in the open-source data plane.
Their documentation is explicit that the product does cost tracking, virtual keys, and failover, and not GPU management or inference serving.
Resolves weights, verifies checksums, plans the GPU fit, and supervises vLLM or llama.cpp. Local and hosted models share one fallback chain.
None. Bifrost governs the calls your applications make.
Also the calls you receive. Signed agents over RFC 9421, metered crawlers over HTTP 402, robots.txt and llms.txt generation, MCP tools behind OAuth2.
An AI gateway. You still terminate TLS, run a WAF, and handle auth somewhere else.
It is that layer. TLS with ACME and OCSP stapling, WAF, nine auth providers, load balancing, and transforms in the same binary and the same config.
They publish roughly 20 microseconds of added latency at 5,000 req/s, and 50x faster than LiteLLM on p99.
50,713 rps through the full policy chain at 0.618 ms p99, single node. These measure different things on different hardware, so read both methodologies rather than the two headline numbers.
Your team writes Go and wants to extend the gateway itself, you are already inside Maxim’s evaluation and observability suite, or the paid tier is an easy purchase.
You want clustering without buying a licence or standing up PostgreSQL, you have inbound agent traffic or APIs to govern, or you want the gateway to serve models on your own GPUs.

before you install?
The gateway is on GitHub under Apache 2.0 and you can install it right now, so nothing here is gated behind a sales call. Use this form for deployment questions, migration scoping, or anything you would rather not file as a public issue.
